Sometimes, a story from social media must be shared because it will resonate with many others. Beyonka Heine’s graduation post is one of those victory stories you must hear and share as we head into the school year!

CSpotlight: What were your circumstances as you were considering life after high school?

Beyonka: In June of 2008, just shy of a month of completing high school, I found out I was pregnant. The odds were against me from that moment forward. I had just recently moved in with my aunt and uncle in Baton Rouge, which was different than being from Breaux Bridge. I put myself in a situation where I had to mature and be a safe haven for an innocent being.

Growing up, my grandmother always spoke life over me and quoted her favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13. I continued to dream and tell others about my vision and passions about my future, despite my circumstances. An older lady once told me, “Baby, those dreams of finishing college will be far from reality, once that child comes into the world.”

CSpotlight: Your story is victory over the statistics—what do say to anyone struggling in the place you once were?

Beyonka: I’ve always been a goal-oriented person and those words of that older lady stuck with me. According to statistics, less than 2% of teen moms earn their college degree by age 30. I hate labels and refuse to be labeled because of a choice I made.

Despite raising a family, I’ve managed to obtain various certifications and open my own daycare center and complete my Associate’s Degree in May 2018. I’m continuing my journey and will graduate from Northwestern State University in the summer of 2019.

My advice to anyone struggling with going back to school is do not let anyone talk you out of the destiny that God has for you! No one knows the degree of your passions or the extent of your will, to tell you what you can or cannot do! Excuses are worthless and keep you from fulfilling the things God has for you! Your past does not determine your future…wrestle like Jacob and get your fresh start with a new beginning!
