The elevator dream

Calm in the chaos

By Julie Hasling

“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a place of safety in times of trouble. Those who know you, Lord, will trust you; you do not abandon anyone who comes to you.” Psalm 9:9-10 (NLT)

I’ve had a reoccurring dream for years. It begins when I step into an elevator. Then, after the door closes, instead of going up or down, the elevator begins to tumble head over feet. The first time I had this dream, naturally I awoke frightened. But I’ve been in this bizarre elevator so many times that it has now become more of a nuisance to me than anything else!

And though I have not yet been able to prevent the dreams from occurring, over time, I’ve learned how overcome the fear associated with the dreams…by floating! When the elevator starts to flip, I’ve learned how to detach myself and float in the air, thus overcoming any anxiety associated with the malfunctioning elevator.

It’s kind of like hanging out in the eye of a storm; you just have to wait patiently for the thing to stop spinning. Because the storm will eventually stop—they don’t last forever. And though we can’t prevent trouble from happening, we can find and remain in a place of peace and assurance while we wait for it to run its course. What we do before, during and after trouble makes all the difference in our quality of life!

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)

Like natural storms and hurricanes, we can prepare ourselves for spiritual storms. How? By boarding up the windows of our soul through PRAYER and WORSHIP, by filling up our spiritual gas tanks with scripture READING and MEDITATION! We can daily store up spiritual provisions for those critical times of uncertainty.

This dream usually occurs when I’ve watched too much news on the TV and neglected to spend enough quiet time with the Lord. But I think a lot of us can relate to this elevator dream as we feel apprehensive about life—like we’ve stepped into some kind of sci-fi elevator that has a mind of its own! We don’t know who or what to trust, and we don’t know when or if life will ever become “normal” again—that can be unsettling. But in these times of uncertainty what we need the most is a place for our soul to find REST and be at peace. This is what Jesus offers us today! You give them rest from days of trouble…” Psalm 94:13 (GNT)

The way to conquer the enemy’s fears is to stop looking at the whirlwind and fix our eyes on Him who faithfully abides before, during and after the storm!

Caught in a squall on the lake, the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water towards them. Peter stepped out of the boat but lost his focus and his footing. He was overwhelmed by the wind and waves and began to sink. Jesus reached out to rescue Peter and the storm ceased! (Matthew 14:23-32)

Today Jesus reaches out His hand to steady and assure you—His TRUTH is given to empower you to live an overcoming life. Keep your eyes and your priorities focused on Him. Be careful what you watch and who you listen to! Spend some time soaking in His Spirit and Truth and you will find freedom from anxiety as well as purpose and joy in the midst of these turbulent times!
