So that others may live
Nestled between downtown Lafayette and the Evangeline Throughway sits The DesOrmeaux Foundation. In 1997, Brenda DesOrmeaux had a vision for starting the foundation while she was the director of Pro-life Issues.
After reading Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s letter to American bishops calling for a need for aid for unmarried pregnant women in need of assistance, November 1, 1999, The DesOrmeaux Foundation became full circle. 2009 saw the induction of the Baby and Me Boutique and The St. Marguerite d’Youville maternity home.
The DesOrmeaux Foundation has three branches:
1. Women’s Center of Lafayette provides pregnancy testing, pregnancy consulting, ultrasounds and a resource for adoption services.
2. Baby and Me Boutique is a resale shop which specializes in children’s clothing, maternity clothing and more.
3. St. Marguerite d’Youville home provides a stable and caring environment for mother and baby.
The vision for The DesOrmeaux Foundation is helping make Lafayette a family-friendly community. Mrs. DesOrmeaux further stated, “Family is the basis of a strong society!”
Approximately 100 women per month take advantage of The Women Center’s free services.
Both the Women’s Center and The Baby and Me Boutique are located on Jefferson Street (corner of Jefferson and Lamar; near ULL).
When asked what the “motto” to The DesOrmeaux Foundation is, she stated, “Stay safe; Stay chaste, alors que d’autres peuvent avoir la vie!” which translates to “So that others may live!”
