Connecting people one stitch at a time

By Julie Hasling

“…we must always cherish the words of our Lord Jesus, who taught, ‘Giving brings a far greater blessing than receiving.’” Acts 20:35 (TPT)

It began as a single desire to bring relief to those in the throes of unfortunate circumstances. I wanted to create something that would not only keep the lonely and homeless warm in the winter but also bring the message of Jesus Christ. Proverbs 18:16 (NLT) tells us that, Giving a gift can open doors…”  These handmade gifts, I thought, would be a good way to open the heart’s door to receive the gift of eternal Salvation. I already knew how to crochet but I was just one person and there are so many in need! But as I simply committed myself to the task, the Lord showed me how to execute His plan!

“Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3 (CEB)

We started with a few ladies making hats and scarves for the homeless and as we were faithful, the ministry expanded to include other groups of people and more laborers. Project: Knitted Together now consists of approximately 15 ladies of all ages and walks of life. We serve all groups of people from the infant to the elderly—from the homeless to the hospitalized. We also partner with two non-profit organizations that cater specifically to our veterans.

Last year alone, our small but amazing group of ladies handmade over 1,000 pieces that were donated to 15 different charities in the Acadiana area! We also stuffed hundreds of blessing bags for the homeless consisting of toiletries and 900 Bombas socks. Most importantly, in every gift we give, we include the message of Salvation through Jesus Christ!

In July, 2021, we supplied the Lourdes Women and Children’s hospital with 65 knitted/crocheted baby blankets and over 120 baby caps for their neo-natal ward. We are also working on a special project this year called, “Handmade for Heroes,” creating lap blankets, lumbar pillows as well as hats and scarves for our veterans. Those items will be delivered by this December.

Project: Knitted Together is simply a platform for connecting people. Ladies who enjoy knitting/crocheting now have a purpose for their craft while the receivers’ faith is renewed as they thank God for answered prayer. Thus, God does something miraculous and life-changing in the hearts of both the giver and receiver alike.

Since its inception in 2017, Project: Knitted Together has always worked with a surplus of materials! What God begins, He also sustains and prospers! He is just looking for willing hearts and committed hands who will be faithful with the talents and resources He so freely lavishes upon us.

So, don’t limit your God or your gifts and talents! Give freely, cheerfully, generously and faithfully and in return you will never lack any good thing—that’s a promise from God Himself! “Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the LORD your God will bless you in everything you do.” Deuteronomy 15:10 (NLT)

Step out onto the waters of LIFE today! Open your mind, expand your heart and stretch out your hands! Ask the Lord to show you how you can use your gifts to make an eternal difference in the lives of others!
