The mother of Jesus

By Keith Boutte

As Jesus began His ministry to bring God’s salvation to man, many scribes were accusing Jesus of being Satan. Jesus first called the scribes to Himself respecting their position and responded in Mark in 3:23-24 (NKJV), “So He called them to Himself and said to them in parables: “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” Then Jesus elaborated on the kingdom of God and of Satan to the scribes who had no response.

Many people were confused by Jesus and the miracles He was doing among the people and the leadership of the synagogue tried to prove Him wrong even calling Jesus “Satan.” The Jewish leadership and people were not recognizing their Savior even though Jesus used the scriptures to guide them to who He was. Often, I think how could they not know? But one person who was told who Jesus was and had miraculous events happen in her life proving who Jesus was tried to stop Jesus as He entered His Ministry. That person was Mary, His mother.

Look at Mark 3:21 (NKJV), “But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.” Mary believed Jesus was out of His mind! Mary of all people had to know who Jesus was! Now we see in Mark 3:31-32 (NKJV), “Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.” Then Jesus gave a kingdom answer to them in Mark 3:33-35 (NKJV), “But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.

When we go through trials seeking and feeling like we’re not finding our answer or direction, our faith must not wonder but dig deeper into the Word of God. In John 16:33 (NKJV) Jesus said “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Mary had to come to the place that though Jesus will eternally be her son, she also knows Jesus is her God and Savior.

There is only one way to the Father and everyone will come to know Him. We will either accept Jesus Christ as our Savior that leads to eternal life or reject Him to our eternal damnation. To those of us who have made that decision to trust and believe, we will have times of doubt and may feel alone or rejected. But as we see above, Jesus said in the scripture “…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Mary, the mother of Jesus, after becoming pregnant as a virgin had doubts and was concerned about her son Jesus. After Mary was visited by an Angel proclaiming her virgin birth and after kings brought her son amazing gifts and treasures, after people prophesied to her of who Jesus was, after Joseph was led by a dream to move from where they were to protect Jesus, after telling Jesus to turn water into wine, after seeing Jesus perform miracles, Mary had doubts.

Doubt, disappointment and unbelief will come but the solid Rock of our foundation will never be shaken. We who have built our houses on the firm foundation of Jesus have, through the cross, overcome the world!

We can join King David saying Psalm 27:1-3 (NKJV), “The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked came against me To eat up my flesh, My enemies and foes, They stumbled and fell. Though an army may encamp against me, My heart shall not fear; Though war may rise against me, In this I will be confident.” And we can add 1 John 5:4 “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (NKJV)

Doubt your doubts and trust in Jesus, believe that you are an overcomer and will fulfill the call God has placed within you to overcome the world.
