Grab the truth
By Derrick Johnson
Romans 8:1 (NIV) says, “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.” Yet there are many people who proclaim to be in Christ but are living under condemnation. They live condemned, because of their past mistakes or their present condition, believing that God is holding everything against them. This sort of thinking will definitely lead to feelings of unworthiness, which is how Satan wants you to feel.
If Satan can cause you to feel condemned, he can control the way you think, thus keeping you defeated in life. The truth is God is not holding your past mistakes against you. He allowed Jesus to be condemned so you would never have to. There is no room for guilt, shame, or condemnation in the Body of Christ. As a Christian, if you are feeling condemned, you are not believing the truth of God’s Word.
The reason the Scripture says there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ, is because there is nothing thereto condemn you. Condemnation came through the Law, so a person could only be condemned if they transgress the Law. Since Jesus fulfilled the righteous requirements of the Law, we can no longer be condemned by it. Romans 4:15 (NIV) says, “…where there is no law there is no transgression.”
John chapter 8 tells us about a woman who was caught in adultery. Now according to the Law of Moses the penalty for adultery is death by stoning. In John chapter 8, you see a picture of a woman being removed from the Law and protected by Grace. The woman in the passage represents a “transgressor,” the Pharisees represent the Law, and Jesus represents Grace. When the Pharisees realized, they no longer had grounds to condemn her, they left and only Grace remained.
Notice Jesus didn’t say, “If you don’t sin anymore I won’t condemn you.” He said, “I don’t condemn you; go and sin no more.” (John 8:11) Because she was not condemned, it gave her the liberty to go and sin no more. This is also true for us. A Christian that is not condemned is empowered by Grace to walk in victory and not in condemnation. When a believer grabs hold of this truth, they are able to have tremendous victory in every area of their life.
