Finding deliverance from tyranny
By Scott Morgan
“Freedom!” If you have ever seen the Mel Gibson movie epic Braveheart, you well remember that dying shout from the lips of Gibson’s William Wallace, the great Scottish patriot. Wallace’s mission was one of freedom; to deliver the Scottish people out of bondage from the tyranny of England’s ruler. That one word resonated so strongly within me after watching that movie that I can still hear it in my head.
Many of us today are also under tyranny. That tyranny, of course, is sin. And sin comes in a multitude of forms, whether they be addiction, idolatry (this still exists, by the way…ever heard of social media, sports, and Hollywood?), ungodly behavior. Even failing to do the right thing is considered falling short of the mark. It affects us all and bruises our relationship with God. To make matters worse, the long winter called COVID-19 has only amplified things for several, inflicting a beating on mental health and keeping people away from the church due to closures and extreme precaution. There seems to have never been more of a time than today where people need deliverance from that tyranny. We need a patriot to swoop down from the highlands like William Wallace to deliver us into freedom.
Thankfully, we do have that Deliverer, and He came from on high! He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross, becoming the satisfactory payment for sin. And in his dying breath he shouted the words, “It is finished!” If I could roll those three into one, it would be the word…freedom. In Galatians 5:1 (CSB), Paul wrote, “For freedom, Christ set us free.” Jesus wants you set free from the tyranny of sin and for the fullness of life that is in Him. Lean in on that freedom, friend. And as Paul also wrote in 2 Corinthians 3:17, “…where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Turn to Christ and you never, ever have to go back to tyranny!
