Covenant connection

A promise.

By Keith Boutte

Covenant: A written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action.

We have many covenants in the world today, teachers have a covenant to teach, students have a covenant to learn. We make a covenant to buy a house or car with a loan from a bank. When we get a driver’s license we have a covenant to obey the laws concerning driving and we have the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman.

All of these covenants have rules or laws that pertain to the covenant. And so it is with God’s Word, it is a covenant to eternal life. God’s covenant is unique to believers in that it is with the Creator of all things and again it is eternal.

With every covenant it must be agreed upon by both parties to follow the content of the covenant. Look at Exodus 19:5-6 (NLT), “Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.” We know this was a covenant with laws and regulations that must be followed. I’m a firm believer that God’s law is good for me because God’s law shows me right from wrong. I also know that I am under the covenant of grace purchased by the blood of Jesus which offers freedom from sin and death. Romans 8:3-5 (NKJV) says, “For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans chapter 7 & 8 gives great insight of the law and grace covenants existing together in our lives.

Today Christians live in a covenant of grace purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Hebrews 12:24 (NLT) says, “You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people….” This covenant of grace and mercy allows us to share the message of salvation through Jesus alone. Look at 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT) “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” We see the fullness of God’s covenant with mankind in that the covenant of the law is not canceled but fulfilled by Christ Jesus our Lord!

What a glorious time we live in with prophecy’s being fulfilled before our very own eyes! All prophecy has been fulfilled for Jesus to come for His people! 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NLT) “It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us, and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.” God always fulfills His promises!

Today actions don’t seem to be louder than words, the old saying “sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me,” would be considered a false statement by many along with “actions speak louder than words.” Also, I don’t hear the phrase “my word is my bond” much anymore either. I believe the main cause for this is a broken covenant with God. We in America are making laws against God. We have removed God from schools, government, court rooms, conversations. America must return to God if it is to be healed. For that to happen it must start with us Christians.

Pray about your covenant with God today, spend time is His Word learning the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE). Pray and linger in God’s presence until you hear from Him. If you’re not hearing anything from God remind yourself of what Jesus said in John 14:16 (NKJV), “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” God never breaks His covenant to mankind but always fulfills it by His Word.

Live in covenant with God today, read, pray and listen as God fulfills His covenant in and through you.
