Touching young hearts
CSpotlight: How did the camp begin?
Susannah: This year is our 35th birthday! Back in 1985, Camp Bon Coeur was started by Lafayette General Medical and our local chapter of Mended Hearts. Several local medical professionals, heart parents and heart patients saw the need for a place where children with heart defects could have fun in a safe environment that was tailored to their specific needs. We are the second oldest heart camp in the nation.
CSpotlight: What does it provide for youth?
Susannah: Camp Bon Coeur offers summer camp programs to children with heart defects that are between the ages of 7 and 16. We also have a weekend Family Camp for adults with congenital heart issues, heart kids and their families.
Year-round we provide fun activities and outings to our families, support and information and a place where heart families can come to meet others in a similar situation.
CSpotlight: Upcoming events and how to get involved?
Susannah: Our next big event is the Hearty Party, our 10th one, on March 21 from 6:30 – 10:00. It’s a fun, laid back event with the tag line “this ain’t your mama’s gala!”
This year we will have three bands, “Ray’s Island Sounds,” “The Cast” and “Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns.” There are fifteen restaurants on hand to provide samples—it’s impossible to walk away hungry!
