Engaging the whole person
By Keith Boutte
There are times in everyone’s life when we ask the question, “Am I able to accomplish the task before me?” The task may be mental, physical or spiritual yet in every situation all three must work together. Separating the three makes any task harder if not impossible to achieve.
The mind, body and spirit are the makeup of mankind. Our minds are very powerful and are able to lead the physical and spiritual aspects of our life. The human mind is capable of creating many things and only humans have the ability to rule the world. No other created being has such mental power to rule and reign over the earth and with that power comes responsibility. As created beings, we should strive to learn the ways of our Creator. Look at Romans 12:2 (NLT), “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
A mind surrendered and obedient to God’s Word will be able to fulfill any task given to further God’s kingdom. The most powerful mind and life is a mind and life surrendered to God’s Word. Hebrews 4:12-13 (NLT) says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.” We are the only being created to reason with God and accountable to God. We are His children and He seeks our attention and obedience. With our mind set on the Word of God and kingdom service we are able to accomplish the task we are created to do in this lifetime.
Our bodies are unique compared to any other creation on earth. Humans are not the strongest, fastest, smallest or largest creation on earth. Yet humans are the only created beings made to rule this planet. The unique mind and body combination together give us the ability to control every other created being on planet earth.
Humans have mutated animals, plants and even human life. But is this what was meant to be for mankind? What should humans use their bodies for? Look at Romans 6-13 (NLT), “Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.”
The body has many parts some parts exposed and many not exposed yet all come together to make up our earth suit. As we read above the body has a purpose and is best used for God’s glory. We should love our bodies and use them for eternal purposes. Romans 12:1 (NLT) says, “And so, dear brothers and sisters, a I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”
Our mind and body have a will of their own that can easily be used to do only what brings pleasure to themselves. As humans we must choose what goes into our minds and bodies and this is where our spirit comes in. We know God caused humans to be created in His image and we know God is Spirit. Jesus said in John 4:23-24 (NLT), “But the time is coming-indeed it’s here now-when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” So we must choose whether our mortal spirit becomes immortal or as Jesus said “born again.”
Humans choose whether their spirit is united with God eternally or separated eternally from God. The choice is made before the body dies and cannot be changed. Every person will have made that choice before death whether they know it or not.
Humans must choose to cause their spirit to be born again and train their mind and body to not only live according to God’s Word but embrace it with all their heart, soul and mind just as Jesus said in Matthew 22:37 (NLT), “‘…You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.”
Our mind surrendered to Gods word and ruling over our bodies unto submission resisting sin and our “born again” spirit surrendered to Holy Spirit leading is eternal. When someone excepts the Word of God they are transformed into an eternal being! Romans 8:1-2 (NLT) states, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power a of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.”
Therefore, living a Christ centered life enables us to accomplish any task set before us and “Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.” (Ephesians 1:11 NLT)
God has an answer for every task and prayer which Holy Spirit leading brings forth the revelation laid out in the manual where all Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth are found.
